Founded in 1984, Capital Research Center is a conservative Washington DC think tank dedicated to monitoring the activities and funding of progressive advocacy organizations.
CRC publishes "Foundation Watch," which ran the article "The Tides Foundation and Center: Unusual Philanthropies Funnel Money to Activist Groups." The article has been re-posted on Heritage "town hall" and elsewhere. CRC is a former member of Alliance for America and is a member of the Cooler Heads Coalition as of 4/04.
CRC started its Greenwatch site in 2001, which runs green-bashing articles and reviews books such as "Eco-Imperialism: Green Power, Black Death," by Paul Driessen of the Atlas Economic Research Foundation. In the press release launching the Greenwatch site in the fall of 2001, Rep. Butch Otter (R-ID), called the groups included in the Greenwatch database "extremists," and declared the purpose of the database was to "monitor and keep the extremists in check."
Known foundation funders have included The Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation, the John Olin Foundation, and the Sarah Scaife Foundation (http://www.mediatransparency.org/search_results/info_on_any_recipient.php?48).
