Since 1962, the neo-conservative Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) "has been dedicated to providing world leaders with strategic insights on; and policy solutions to; current and emerging global issues." (CSIS website)

Since 2000, CSIS has been led by John J. Hamre, formerly deputy secretary of defense. Former senator Sam Nunn chairs the board of trustees, which is made up of prominent individuals from both the public and private sectors. CSIS research focuses primarily on technology and public policy, international trade and finance, and energy. (from CSIS website, 4/04) According to Right Web, CSIS was affiliated with Georgetown University until 1986 when it was ousted due to academic incredibility. Projects under CSIS's Energy Program include enabling oil drilling in the Caspian Sea, and studying the productive capacity of Middle East oil fields. (An extensive backgrounder, including organizational ties to the Iran-Contra affair, is available from Right Web, http://rightweb.irc-online.org/groupwatch/csis.php)
