FACTSHEET: David R. Legates

DETAILS

Professor, University of Delaware
Associate Professor in Climatology, George Marshall Institute

Dr. Legates is a climate change "contrarian" and prolific writer.

"In addition to teaching at Louisiana State University, the University of Oklahoma and the University of Virginia, Dr. Legates has served as chief research scientist in a variety of commercial venues, including the Southern Regional Climate Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and the Center for Computational Geosciences in Norman, Oklahoma." (From George Marshall website)

KEY QUOTES

15 May, 2006
"The underlying theme is that the climate system is complex, resilient and inherently stable. Research from a wide variety of disciplines, published in a number of peer-reviewed journals and spanning a broad spectrum of climate expertise, supports this conclusion. Throughout the millennia, life has survived and thrived despite wide changes in solar output, air temperature and atmospheric gas concentrations."

"When you have the science on your side, you argue the science. When you don`t have the science on your side you attack the messenger."

Recent claims that coral reefs are “bleaching” (losing color and dying off) due to warming oceans ignore the evidence that bleaching appears to be a healthy response in which corals expel one symbiotic species of algae for a better-adapted species that allows corals to thrive in warmer waters. -2006 http://www.ncpa.org/pdfs/st285.pdf

QUOTES

15 May, 2006
"Climate science has improved but debate continues regarding the extent to which human activities contribute to global warming and what the potential impact on the environment might be. Importantly, much of the scientific evidence contradicts assertions that substantial global warming is likely to occur soon and that the predicted warming will harm the Earth's biosphere."

2 May, 2007
"The biggest misconception is that climate change is going to be dramatic and that it`s going to be extreme."

The complexity of the climate and the limitations of data and computer models mean projections of future climate change are unreliable at best. In sum, the science does not support claims of drastic increases in global temperatures over the 21st century, nor does it support claims of human influence on weather events and other secondary effects of climate change.

KEY DEEDS

Co-authored a paper with Willie Soon and Sallie Baliunas, which claimed that temperatures in the 20th Century were not higher than average. Legates later testifed, along with Soon, before the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works.

28 July, 2003
Co-author of Indpendent Institute report "New Perspectives in Climate Change: What the EPA Isn't Telling Us" criticizing the EPA's 2001 Climate Action Report.

Appeared on Glenn Beck's May 2, 2007 special "Exposed: The Climate of Fear"

17 May, 2007
His non-peer reviewed analysis of the science of polar bears being threatened by global warming was published on the NCPA website. This analysis has been strongly discredited by much larger and peer reviewed bodies of work.
