CFE is a national grassroots policy organization promoting environmental policies consistent with property rights and free markets.
CFE as an offshoot of Citizens for A Sound Economy, founded in 1990. CFE rallied opposition to the Clean Air Act and California's Proposition128 (Big Green). The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette wrote, CFE " has no citizen membership of its own. Started in 1990, the conservative think tank has labeled most environmental problems -- including acid rain, natural resource depletion and shrinking landfill space -- as myths, and has lobbied for deregulation of corporations as the solution to environmental problems. Oil, auto, timber and chemical companies finance its inside-the-Washington-Beltway activities." ("Groups' 'green' names fade under scrutiny" February 28, 1995)
CFE's tax status is unknown, and the Guidestar database of non-profit 990s has no listing for Citizens for the Environment.
